Africa Embraces Volleyball Video Technology for the African Men’s Volleyball Club Championship in Libya

The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) has officially introduced the Video Challenge system at the 46th edition of the African Men’s Volleyball Club Championship, taking place from April 19 to 30, 2025, in Misurata, Libya.

This high-profile continental competition, which brings together the top clubs from across Africa, marks a significant step forward in the modernization of the sport on the continent. The introduction of the Video Challenge system — a cutting-edge refereeing aid now standard in global volleyball competitions — underscores the CAVB’s commitment to fair play and technological advancement.

High-Tech for High Stakes

To ensure accuracy and transparency in officiating, the CAVB has installed a comprehensive video challenge setup comprising 23 cameras, fully aligned with the regulations of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV).

The system includes:

  • 6 line cameras to verify whether the ball landed in or out of bounds;
  • 2 net cameras to detect net violations and under-net penetration;
  • 6 block cameras for analyzing touches during blocks;
  • 2 attack line cameras for zone violation checks;
  • 6 floor contact cameras that detect precise ball-to-surface interactions;
  • 1 overview camera providing a panoramic view for optimal coordination across angles.

A Tool for Sporting Justice

The Video Challenge system is a game-changing innovation that allows coaches to request reviews of controversial decisions. With multiple angles at their disposal, referees can examine disputed actions with greater clarity, ensuring decisions are grounded in evidence rather than assumption. This not only reduces the margin for human error but also fosters trust in officiating and upholds the sport’s integrity.

Africa Keeps Pace with Global Standards

By equipping its premier championship with this advanced technology, the CAVB signals a clear ambition: to bring African volleyball up to par with the highest international standards. This initiative not only elevates the credibility of the competition but also honors the dedication of participating clubs by providing them with a world-class competitive environment.

In Misurata, the cameras will do more than record the artistry of the game — they will stand guard as the silent arbiters of truth, ensuring justice on the court is seen, replayed, and upheld.
