The Competitions Organization Commission of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) held its first meeting on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. The hybrid meeting was chaired by Mrs. Bouchra Hajij, President of the CAVB, in the presence of the CAVB Vice Presidents.
According to the CAVB President, every effort must be made to develop innovative strategies for organizing volleyball competitions in Africa.
« We need to introduce innovation in organization to fill venues and stands, increase the number of participating countries—especially among young players—and expand the list of host nations. We must open up to other countries on the continent regarding the organization of competitions, » said Mrs. Bouchra Hajij.
She expressed her satisfaction in taking part in these discussions and strategic reflections to enhance the future of African volleyball.
« We must maximize the value of flagship competitions, particularly the African Nations Championship and the African Club Championship. I am confident that we will be able to implement high-level competitions and offer an engaging experience through virtual platforms, live streaming, Facebook, and other digital tools, » emphasized the CAVB President.
For his part, Baï Dodou Jallow, President of the Commission, acknowledged that, « we have an important task ahead, which will require the involvement of everyone over the next four years. »
According to him, « African volleyball is experiencing significant growth under the leadership of President Bouchra Hajij. It is our responsibility to elevate the organizational standards of our sport’s events, and the active participation of each of us will help our continent improve the organization of volleyball competitions. »
The Commission plays a central role in the organization and development of CAVB competitions. It ensures the establishment of the official event calendar, whether annual, biennial, or quadrennial. It regularly updates sports regulations as well as the African rankings, defining guidelines and point allocation criteria. Additionally, it sets specific rules for continental competitions in collaboration with the sports events department.
It also oversees the preparation and organization of African competitions, with logistical support from the technical department. Its responsibilities include monitoring player transfers and resolving disputes submitted to the Board of Directors. The Commission ensures the implementation of strict standards for competition organization and supports the development of national leagues. It reviews all proposals related to sports infrastructure and submits recommendations to the governing bodies. Furthermore, it provides continuous oversight of organizers’ operational plans and reports to the Executive Committee.
Its key activities include biannual meetings, updating event organization guidelines, and revising the African rankings. Supervising volleyball and beach volleyball events is among its essential missions. The Commission also proposes new competition formats for submission to the CAVB Council for integration into the official calendar. Finally, it submits detailed event reports with recommendations for improving tournament organization and execution.
