Revival of Cape Verde’s School “Olimpiadas”: A Celebration of Youth, Sport, and Island Unity

0

In Cape Verde, the Olimpiadas — emblematic school sports games — have always been more than just a competition. They represent a cherished moment of public enthusiasm, unity among youth from different islands, and the promotion of values such as fair play, excellence, and fraternity. After a long hiatus, these games have returned in full force and are now celebrating their third consecutive edition.

This year, the island of São Vicente, specifically the city of Mindelo, will have the honor of hosting the grand celebration of Cape Verdean school sports, from March 24 to 30. A notable feature of this edition is the introduction of beach volleyball in the Under-15 category, with matches scheduled for March 27, 28, and 29.

Regional phases have already taken place across the municipalities of the country, engaging students, teachers, and local coordinators in the shared goal of representing their region with pride and talent. In São Vicente, eight secondary schools will be represented by regional champions in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.

The Cape Verde Volleyball Federation has provided significant logistical, material, and organizational support through its technical team and the active presence of national coach Márcio Araújo. He worked directly with the participating teachers, delivering practical training sessions focused on age-appropriate coaching techniques for young athletes.

It is worth noting that the winners of these Olimpiadas will go on to represent Cape Verde internationally at the Lusophone Games to be held in Timor-Leste — an exciting and inspiring prospect for these young athletes striving for excellence.

The school Olimpiadas thus reaffirm their fundamental role in the development of sports, the strengthening of inter-island bonds, and the cultivation of active and engaged citizenship among Cape Verdean youth.
